Biography

Early life (1880-1891)

Ambrose Macmillan was born in the early hours of 12 July, 1880, in Oxford, Oxfordshire, England. His father, Hiram, was overjoyed with him. He had two older sisters, both named affectionately Tessie and Lila. His mother, Dolly, was an American society witch, who his father had met at a meeting of the International Confederation of Wizards, as Dolly's father, Cyrus Spindle, was also a member.

The Macmillans lived in a beautiful manor outside of Castle Cary, in Somerset. Ambrose and his siblings grew up with many lavish toys and books in the West Country.

Hogwarts years (1891-1898)

He received his Hogwarts letter in the summer of 1891, and before attending visited Diagon Alley. He purchased a wand made of poplar and dragon heartstring from Ollivander's Wand Shop.

He was sorted into Slytherin House in September of that year, and his sorting marked a traditional turn in the Macmillan family- for years, the Macmillans had often been sorted into Hufflepuff.

He left the school upon the completion of his seventh year in 1898. He was an incredibly distinguished graduate, having been Head Boy as well as a Prefect. He achieved ten N.E.W.T.s as well.

In the two years before the end of Hogwarts and his marriage in 1900, Ambrose began a career in the Ministry of Magic. His first position was as a court scribe in the Wizenagmot, at the age of twenty.

He married Blodwen Carrow, a daughter of the Most Ancient House of Carrow, on 14 July, 1900, in Oxford, Oxfordshire, England. She was the second oldest daughter of Cornelian Carrow and Primrose Carrow (née Lovegood), and had three brothers, Blaise, Alastor, and Alector.

Ambrose and Blodwen had four children during their marriage: their first child was Melania, born in 1901. A son followed, named Cyrus Macmillan, in 1902. Then came Marvin Macmillan in late 1903, and then a second daughter, Bryony Macmillan, in late 1905.

Wizenagmot (1912-1924)

Ambrose Macmillan was first elected to the Wizenagmot in 1912, at the age of 32. He served for four years, and then was elected again in 1916. He served for another four years, finishing in 1920, and then was elected a third time, in 1920: he continued serving until 1924, when he was then appointed to a seat on the International Confederation of Wizards.

Marriage of Melania Macmillan (1920-1923)

In 1920, the eldest son and heir of Sirius Black II, Head to the Noble and Most Ancient House of Black, became infatuated with Ambrose's eldest daughter, Melania, in her sixth year of school. They began a relationship and Arcturus Black III, son of Sirius Black II, asked his parents if he would be able to court her when the time came. This was very out of the ordinary for most witches and wizards in Britain at this time- most of them started with courting first, relationship second. However, Arcturus was not sure if he wanted to marry her from the beginning, but he knew that from watching the dynamics of the Macmillan family that they would be suitable.

The Macmillans traditionally were a house divided, with one branch drifting toward the darkest side of magics, while the other side tried to remain as light as they could. Ambrose was from the side of the darker branch, the children of the family was found acceptable by Sirius Black II to begin forging a contract.

Ambrose's daughter married Arcturus Black III in 1923, in a ceremony that was so extravagant that the Daily Prophet made it their front page. After the wedding, Arcturus and Melania embarked on a holiday around the world. They visited Thailand, Australia, New Zealand, and New York City in the United States of America before finally coming home. The holiday lasted six months and photos of the trip can be found in the Black family archives.

International Confederation of Wizards (1924-1927)

The International Confederation of Wizards is a wizarding intergovernmental organisation, and roughly equivalent to the United Nations in the Muggle world. British seats on the International Confederation of Wizards are selected by the Minister for Magic, and subject to the approval of the Wizengamot.

Ambrose was a member of the Confederation when the Confederation called an emergency meeting to address magical disturbances that were risking exposure of the wizarding world, in 1926. They threatened to send a delegation to the United States of America as they thought the increase in the MACUSA Magical Exposure Threat Level to Severe: Unexplained Activity was related to Gellert Grindelwald. Ambrose would have likely been apart of this delegation, as he had an American mother.

In June of 1927, Ambrose Macmillan was in attendance at the International Confederation of Wizards Summit, which took place in London. He made a speech just before President Picquery of MACUSA received a "prestige honor" from the Confederation.

Etymology

Ambrose hails from the Late Latin name Ambrosius, which was derived from the Greek name Αμβροσιος (Ambrosios) meaning "immortal". Saint Ambrose was a 4th-century theologian and bishop of Milan, who is considered a Doctor of the Church.
