Cornelius Moon (24 March, 1881 - 6 June, 1972) was an English pure-blood wizard who attended Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry from 1 September, 1892 to June 1899. He was born in Primrose Hill, London, England, and was the son of Sigmund Moon and Florence Moon (née Nettle). He was the brother of Astrea Higgs (née Moon), Barnabas Moon, and Phineas Moon.

He began a political career which spanned several decades. He was first elected to the Wizengamot in 1909, at the young age of 27. His influence would only grow as a result of the appointment of his first cousin, Leonard Spencer-Moon, to the post of Minister for Magic in 1939.

He married Òceane Malfoy in the year 1907, and they only had one child together, Horace Moon, in 1909. Òceane's father was Septimus Malfoy I, who was the Head of the Noble and Most Ancient House of Malfoy, an ancient English wizarding family that has been around for several hundreds of years.

Cornelius Moon was the paternal grandfather of Silas Moon, and a great-grandfather of Pandora Lovegood (née Moon), who ran off to Ireland to marry Xenophilius Lovegood. He was also the second great-grandfather of Luna Lovegood.

Biography

Early life (1881-1906)

Cornelius Moon was born on 24 March, 1881, in Primrose Hill, London, England into the largely influential Moon family. His father was Sigmund Moon, an elected member of the Wizengamot, and his mother was Florence Moon (née Nettle), who once worked in an orphanage.

He was the oldest of four siblings. When he was three years old, his only sister, Astrea, was born, in late 1884. When he was ten years old, his younger brother, Barnabas, was born, in the winter of 1892. Barnabas was an accident, but his parents decided to have another child so that the baby Barnabas would not grow up an only child, and so when Cornelius was thirteen, he gained a second brother, Phineas, in the summer of 1894.

Hogwarts years (1892-1899)

Cornelius Moon began attending Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry on 1 September, 1892. He was sorted into Slytherin House. Having had a relatively good education before attending Hogwarts, he was accepted into the Hogwarts Latin Society at the tender age of twelve.

The Latin Society was a recreational club at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry for students interested in studying Latin. Students would meet weekly and the club also functioned as a tutoring system for younger students. Students automatically become members of this club when they achieve an Exceeds Expectations or higher on their Latin language O.W.L.

He left the school in June of 1899, having passed all of his N.E.W.T.s with flying colours. After graduation, his father sent him to the United States of America to establish a second international office of the Moon family's business, Telescopeworks (which produced exactly what the name tells). However, Moon had a nervous breakdown at a meeting which ended the venture early.

Business career (1900-1906)

After returning to Great Britain, Cornelius Moon entered much smaller business at home, purchasing (with assistance from his family) Derwent & Company, a manufacturer of cauldron bottoms. After Moon purchased the company, the business was saved, and Derwent & Company became a leading manufacturer of cauldron bottoms in the early 20th Century.

Marriage (1907)

He married Òceane Malfoy in the year 1907. Òceane's father was Septimus Malfoy I, who was the Head of the Noble and Most Ancient House of Malfoy, an ancient English wizarding family that has been around for several hundreds of years.

However, the Malfoy family had recently experienced some minor troubles which caused them some embarrassment. Òceane's older sister, Lavinia, had been disowned in 1898 for marrying a man called Phineas Abbott. Additionally, the recent death of Òceane's other sister, Cècile, made the papers in 1900, which had caused them great grief. Phineas Abbott, however, was a progressive and was considered far below their social station, as the Abbotts were doing quite poorly at the time.

The Moon family, on the other hand, were successful in business, and because Cornelius's own father, Sigmund Moon, was an elected conservative, Septimus Malfoy I considered them allies. Cornelius married Òceane on 24 April, 1907. She encouraged and supported his entry into politics, and was to be his constant companion, helper, and trusted colleague.

Later life (1908-1972)

They only had one son together, Horace Moon, in 1909. In the year 1908, Cornelius Moon began a political career, and represented the historic county of Middlesex, becoming elected first in 1909, at the age of 27. His influence would only grow as a result of the appointment of his first cousin, Leonard Spencer-Moon, to the post of Minister for Magic in 1939.

He was present as a political guest at the wedding of Arcturus Black III, Heir to the House of Black, to Melania E. Macmillan, daughter of Ambrose Macmillan, which took place in 1923. The ceremony was subject to more than two hundred invited guests, and covered heavily in various newspapers, such as The Daily Prophet or Witch Weekly Magazine.

In 1932, his son, Horace, married Sigourney Bourdillon, and Cornelius's only grandson, Silas, was born in 1933.

During the Global Wizarding War, Cornelius's first cousin, Leonard Spencer-Moon, also a career politician, became Minister for Magic following his predecessor, Hector Fawley's, political downfall for not taking Gellert Grindelwald's "For the Greater Good" revolution seriously. Spencer-Moon proved himself a sound Minister, overseeing a period of great international turmoil in both the wizarding (global wizarding war) and the Muggle world (Second World War). He was also known to have maintained a good working relationship with Winston Churchill, the Muggle Prime Minister.

Cornelius Moon was re-elected to the Wizengamot in 1944.

Widowhood

Cornelius's wife, Òceane, died aged 63 in London, on 9 October, 1945. The loss of his wife saddened him, but her death had been somewhat expected.

He was elected again to the Wizengamot in 1954.

Death

Cornelius Moon died on 6 June, 1972, at the age of 91, in the Primrose Hill neighbourhood of London, England. He had been a widow for a period of 27 years.

Legacy

Cornelius Moon was the paternal grandfather of Silas Moon, and a great-grandfather of Pandora Lovegood (née Moon), who ran off to Ireland to marry Xenophilius Lovegood. He was also the second great-grandfather of Luna Lovegood.

Etymology

The name Cornelius was a Roman family name that possibly derives from the Latin element cornu meaning "horn". In Acts in the New Testament Cornelius is a centurion who is directed by an angel to seek Peter. After speaking with Peter he converts to Christianity, and he is traditionally deemed the first gentile convert. The name was also borne by a few early saints, including a 3rd-century pope. In England it came into use in the 16th century, partly due to Dutch influence.

The Moon surname is of Norman origin, and thought to derive from a place name such as from Moyon in La Manche, or from Mohun in Normandy.
