Godiva Smith (née Fowler) (8 April, 1959 - 1 August, 1997) was a pure-blood witch, and the daughter of Nicolas Fowler and his wife. She was the niece of Dahlia Prewett (née Fowler), and the first cousin of Maud Prewett. She attended Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry from 1 September, 1970, to June 1977. She played on the Slytherin Quidditch Team as Chaser, and married into the prominent Smith family. She was the mother of Sally Smith, and a paternal aunt by marriage of Zacharias Smith.
During the Second Wizarding War, Godiva was murdered during the takeover of the Ministry by Corban Yaxley, who later became the Head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement. Godiva was made senior undersecretary to the Head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement upon Amelia Bones's murder in 1996, and served Pius Thicknesse when he was appointed head in 1996. According to Yaxley, Godiva provided him "some trouble" while he attempted to place her under the Imperius Curse, and he was forced to kill her when she refused to do his bidding, and this occurred "around the same time" as the murder of Rufus Scrimgeour.
Biography[]
Early life[]
Godiva Fowler was born into the Fowler family on 8 April, 1959, in the village of Chudley, Devon, England. Both of her parents were pure-bloods, and her father, Nicolas, was an employee of the Ministry of Magic's Magical Law Enforcement Patrol, somewhat akin to being a muggle police officer, at the time of her birth.
She had a maternal aunt, Dahlia, who was the wife of Gideon Prewett, a member of the House of Prewett. When she turned fourteen she would gain a younger cousin, Maud Prewett.
Hogwarts years[]
She received her Hogwarts letter in the summer of 1970. That same summer, she presumably visited Diagon Alley, located in London, and purchased a wand made of alder and unicorn hair from Ollivander's Wand Shop. On 1 September, 1970, she boarded the train for Hogwarts and was sorted into Slytherin House that same night. She shared a dormitory with Lucinda Talkalot.
When she was in her fourth year of school, Godiva tried out for the Slytherin Quidditch Team, and was chosen as one of the team's Chasers. She held the position alongside her dormmate, Lucinda Talkalot. In Autumn 1976, Lucinda was made Quidditch Captain, and that year, with the help of Ansel Quick, a fourth year, the three Chasers were able to work together so well that the Slytherins won the Inter-House Quidditch Cup.
In her seventh year of school, however, the Slytherin Team lost in what was considered to be the most grueling game in living Hogwarts memory. The Slytherins, captained by her friend Lucinda, lost to Gryffindor by 530 points. The game had been so brutal that Godiva later swore off Quidditch forever.
Later life[]
She had married into the prominent pure-blood Smith family by 1979, about two years after leaving school. Her six year old cousin, Maud Prewett, was a flower girl during the ceremony. On 25 August, 1980, Godiva gave birth to a baby girl, Salome Smith, nicknamed "Sally." That same year, her brother-in-law and sister-in-law had a son, Zacharias. She began work as a civil servant sometime around 1980 as well.
Godiva's daughter, Sally, began attending Hogwarts in 1991 with Godiva's nephew, Zacharias, and was sorted into Hufflepuff House.
Second Wizarding War[]
Godiva was made senior undersecretary to the Head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement upon Amelia Bones's murder in 1996, which had elevated Pius Thicknesse to Head, after the previous senior undersecretary had "gone into hiding."
Ministry Takeover (1997)[]
Godiva was murdered during the takeover of the Ministry by Corban Yaxley, a Death Eater, who was later appointed Head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement by Lord Voldemort's puppet administration after her death. According to Yaxley, Godiva provided him "some trouble" while he attempted to place her under the Imperius Curse in July 1997. Yaxley was forced to kill her when she refused to do his bidding, and this occurred "around the same time" as the murder of Rufus Scrimgeour, on 1 August, 1997.
Post-mortem[]
It is unknown what became of Godiva's husband, Mr. Smith, and daughter Sally, following her death. They may have gone into hiding as a result of Godiva's resistance of the Imperius Curse. Godiva's nephew, Zacharias Smith, abandoned Dumbledore's Army at the Battle of Hogwarts, but considering that Sally Smith was never apart of the organisation in the first place, it is unknown whether she would have participated to avenge her mother.
Etymology[]
- Godiva Fowler's name in itself is a play on words. The name "Godiva" means "gift of god," but it also can sound phonetically like "go dive a," and her surname, Fowler, is meant to represent a Quidditch "foul."
- One famous bearer of the name Godiva was Lady Godiva, an 11th-century English noblewoman who, according to legend, rode naked through the streets of Coventry to protest the high taxes imposed by her husband upon the townspeople.
- Fowler is a name that was formed by the Anglo-Saxon society of old Britain. The name was thought to have been used for someone who once worked as a person who worked as the fowler or the bird-catcher having derived from the Old English word "fugelere" which literally means "hunter of wild birds, fowler."
