Goshawk is the surname of a wizarding family that lived in Ipswich, Suffolk, England. Members of this family are typically half-blood or pure-blood, and sorted into Slytherin or Ravenclaw House. Recent members that have attended Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry include Miranda Goshawk, author of The Standard Book of Spells, who attended from 1932 to 1939.
By the early 20th century, the Goshawks were relatively impoverished, and youngsters, like Miranda Goshawk, had to resort to "embarrassing" hand-me-down robes. The Goshawk family is known for being one of the largest wizarding families, consisting of many descendants, just like the Gamps and the Weasleys.
History
Early history
The family likely originated in the middle ages. It is believed that John Goshawk, a wizard who lived in the 14th century, was the founder of this family, and the surname stuck possibly due to his bird Patronus, which took the form of a medium sized raptor.
Recent history
The Goshawks, similar to the Gamps and the Weasleys, soon gained a reputation for having lots of children, beginning in the mid-19th century. Because they never had a favourable reputation, the Goshawks were excluded from The Pureblood Directory, which was published in the 1930s. By the early 20th century, the Goshawks were relatively impoverished, and youngsters, like Miranda Goshawk, had to resort to "embarrassing" hand-me-down robes.
